The first algological study of phytoplankton of the largest river of the North Fennoscandia has revealed 17 species and varieties of Bacillariophyta (Centrophyceae); among which representatives of the genus Aulacoseira dominate taxonomical diversity. Rare for the Russian flora species are Aulacoseira distans (Ehr.) Simonsen var. nivaloides (Camburn) Siver et Kling, A. lacusctris (Grunow) Krammer, and a new genus and species Brevisira arentii (Kolbe) Krammer have been investigated.
