First electron microscopy study of Bacillariophyta, a major component of Lake Kronotskoye phytoplankton, revealed more than 80 taxa of diatoms. Among them two species are new for the flora of Russia (Cavinula thoroddsenii (Foged) Lange-Bert. and Navicula jentzschii Grunow), 10 forms were identified only to the genus. Genera Cymbella Agardh,, Pseudostaurosira Williams & Round, Gomphonema Ehrenb., Planothidium Round & Bukht. and Navicula Bory are richest in species. Dominating species of phytoplankton are represented by pennate (Asterionella Hassall) and centric (Aulacoseira Thw., Handmannia M. Perag.) diatoms.
