Abstract

Morphology and ultrastructure of two strains of picoplanktonic Cyanoprokaryota (Cyanophyta, Cyanobacteria) isolated from the littoral and deepwater areas of Lake Baikal were studied with epifluorescence and electron microscopy. Nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA genes of these strains were analyzed. Peculiar features of strains’ growth under different environmental conditions were revealed. As a result, isolated picocyanoprokaryota were referred to genera Synechococcus Nägeli and Cyanobium Rippka et Cohen-Baz. The latter have not been recorded in Lake Baikal.
