The desmid alga Cosmarium polygonum (Nägeli) Arch. var. acutius Messik. is characterized by tolerance to the influence of phenolcarboxylic acids (gallic, benzoic and caffeic) in concentrations which depress the growth processes of some Cyanoprokaryota. An increase of catalase enzyme activity and total carotenoid content in the experimental variants in comparison with control was observed.
